Pipe Creek parking lot closes as Sandusky begins access improvements

The $58,071.75 project improves access near the former rowing association building and kayak launch. Construction is scheduled to finish Dec. 1.

The parking lot at Pipe Creek Wildlife Area is closed while Sandusky improves access around the former rowing association building and kayak launch.

The city reported the closure in its Oct. 8 announcement. Its project page says construction began in early October and is scheduled to finish Dec. 1.

Underground Solutions of Sandusky received the $58,071.75 contract, funded through the city's Capital Projects Fund.

Plans call for gravel improvements, a wider northern entrance, stone pathways and a loop south of the building to improve access to the kayak and canoe launch. Crews will clear vegetation within about 15 feet of the building and prune tree limbs where needed.

The city says some trees will be removed where necessary, while larger mature trees will be preserved.

Sandusky maintains the wildlife area's entrance; the Ohio Department of Natural Resources manages its wetland cells. The city acquired the former Sandusky Bay Rowing Association storage building in 2025 and has used it for kayak storage and programs with local organizations.

The city warns of equipment activity and limited access during construction. The Dec. 1 date is the scheduled completion, not a confirmed parking-lot reopening. Check the project page for updates before visiting.
